Indian stock markets opened lower on Monday, impacted by rising crude oil prices amid geopolitical tensions. Experts analyze the situation and its effects on market sentiment.

Stock market decline in India due to crude oil prices spike

Indian stock markets faced a downward trend in early trade on Monday as benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty reacted negatively to a spike in crude oil prices caused by escalating geopolitical uncertainties. The 30-share BSE Sensex fell by 19.38 points to 78,479.79, while the 50-share NSE Nifty slid by 5.10 points to 24,567.45 as investors reacted to the changing global cues.

As the trading session progressed, the situation worsened. The BSE benchmark Sensex recorded a significant decline of 158.62 points, settling at 78,340.55, and the Nifty decreased by 45.20 points to 24,524.95. This downward movement reflected concerns over the volatility in oil prices, which directly impacts India’s economy.

From the Sensex pack, several key stocks such as Eternal, State Bank of India, InterGlobe Aviation, Power Grid, NTPC, and Bharti Airtel faced losses. In contrast, Titan, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Tech emerged as the winners, showcasing their resilience amidst a challenging market environment.

The rise in Brent crude, now priced at USD 84.41 per barrel—an increase of 1.03 percent—has raised alarms among investors. This uptick in oil prices represents the third consecutive increase, attributed to Iran’s announcement of no immediate plans for reopening the Strait of Hormuz combined with recent attacks on Gulf shipping, which have heightened geopolitical risk.

Rajesh Palviya, Head of Research at Axis Direct, emphasized the implications of elevated crude prices. He stated, “Elevated crude prices remain a key risk. With Brent crude rising due to geopolitical tensions, investors are on high alert.”

Despite the crude oil concerns, market momentum appears mildly bullish. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remain optimistic, purchasing equities worth Rs 480.24 crore on Friday, as per exchange data. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, remarked, “The undertone of the market is mildly bullish. The principal bullish factor is the better-than-expected Q1 results.”

He added that the overall positive sentiment can also be linked to the sustained buying trend observed among FIIs throughout July and August. This buying spree reflects a growing confidence in the Indian market.

Looking globally, Asian markets painted a positive picture, with South Korea’s KOSPI, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng indices trading higher. This upward trend in Asian markets contributes to a constructive backdrop for regional equities.

The US stock markets ended in positive territory on Friday, which provided some relief to the global market outlook. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted, “Asian markets are trading higher in early trade, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi each advancing more than 1 percent, providing a constructive backdrop for regional equities.”

It is crucial to note that on the previous Friday, the Sensex had dropped by 455.59 points, or 0.58 percent, closing at 78,499.17, while the Nifty fell by 65.35 points, or 0.27 percent, wrapping up at 24,570.65. Investors remain cautious as they navigate these shifts, keeping a close eye on developments that may influence future trading sessions.
